Scorafy vs Gradescope
Gradescope's AI organises the marking - it clusters similar answers so a human marks each group once. Scorafy's AI does the first-pass marking - it reads each open-ended answer against your rubric, awards a level per criterion with quoted evidence, and hands the draft to a reviewer behind a release gate. One makes traditional exam marking faster; the other drafts the judgement on open-ended work.
AI-powered assessment platform that analyses each respondent's specific answers and generates a unique, personalised report with personalised strengths, development areas, and recommendations.
Free plan available. Self-serve paid plans from $39 USD/month (Starter) to $249/month (Pro), with Business and Enterprise plans quoted. Education and non-profit organisations get 40% off Starter, Growth and Pro. Per-respondent AI assessment is included on every paid plan.
Gradescope, owned by Turnitin, is the established grading workflow for universities. Instructors upload scanned paper exams, student PDFs, code or bubble sheets, mark question by question with a dynamic rubric, and handle regrade requests online. Its AI-assisted grading groups similar student answers so an instructor can mark a batch at once. Its site cites 2,600+ universities and 700M+ questions graded.
Free Basic plan for individual instructors (PDF assignments, rubrics, regrade requests). AI-assisted grading, programming assignments, LMS integration and SSO sit in the Institutional licence, priced per student on quote. Checked 11 Sep 2026 - see gradescope.com for current terms.

An honest look at what each platform does best.
Gradescope strengths
- The default grading workflow at thousands of universities, with years of institutional track record
- Marks what few AI tools can: scanned handwriting, maths working, code, bubble sheets
- Answer grouping turns 200 similar responses into a handful of groups to mark once
- Rubric changes apply retroactively to work already graded
- Regrade requests, LMS grade sync and SSO inside the institutional licence
- Backed by Turnitin, so procurement and data-processing terms are already familiar to most universities
- The AI drafts the mark itself: a level per criterion, the evidence that earned it, and a confidence signal - so reviewing is faster than marking
- Works from the first submission with no exam template, no scanning and no institutional licence
- Release gate, override ledger and Audit Pack make every judgement independently auditable
- AI-marks audio, video and file submissions, not only typed or scanned text
- Delivers the assessment to respondents directly, with branded links and cohort analytics
- Self-serve and free to trial, with EU data residency in Dublin and an optional Sydney region
Why choose Scorafy?
The fundamental difference is in how responses are analysed. Most platforms - including Gradescope - treat responses as data points for aggregate reporting or template-based result pages.
Scorafy reads each respondent's specific answers - including free-text responses - and generates a completely unique assessment report. Every person gets personalised strengths, development areas, and actionable recommendations written specifically for them.

Our honest recommendation
Gradescope is the right choice for traditional academic marking at scale - paper exams, problem sets, code, bubble sheets - inside a university that already has or can buy the institutional licence. Scorafy cannot read handwriting, autograde code or sync to an LMS. Choose Scorafy when the work is open-ended and submitted digitally - written, file, audio or video - and you want the AI to draft the mark against your rubric with evidence, then hold it for a reviewer. Universities running both are not unusual: Gradescope for the exam hall, Scorafy for coursework and competency assessment.
